Two Months In...

A short photo essay of life so far. Noma Ndlovu Last week marked two months since I moved to Switzerland. In that time, I’ve experienced lots of ups (romantic dinners, afternoon swims in the river, bonding with my mother-in-law) and lots of downs (mostly related to not speaking Swiss-German). As a writer, communicating and sharing life by assembling words in a certain order is my raison d’etre. And yet sometimes, not even the best turn of phrase can properly capture all the feels. This week, inspired by my law school mentor Kams on sabbatical, I’m sharing my experience in Switzerland through photos. I caught the sunrise during my flight to Zürich. Moving to Switzerland is the scariest thing I’ve ever done. In this moment, the colors and the clouds felt like an affirmation of my decision. First week, first impressions. What a magical place. My favorite photo from the first month. During this week, I kept asking myself “What have you done?” I spent a lot of time in the old city because thats where I heard the most English. Tanz im Rosegarten using dance as political resistance. The River Aare. Instagram would have you believe that people commute to work down this river. It’s not true!! But when it hits 80 degrees, locals do jump in the Aare to cool off. I’ve swam in it three times though I have to dare a jump. Enjoying a friend's band, Ruederer, perform in Köniz. Enjoying a friend's band, Ruederer, perform in Köniz. Spent a day in the mountains near Schwarzsee with my husband’s family. Everyone spoke Swiss-German. I smiled, laughed at the right moments and took photos. Here’s an obligatory cow photo because the Swiss (myself now included) love cows. I’ve had an array of experiences since arriving in Switzerland. I’m learning new things about myself, including the fact that I love taking photos. I love the effort of capturing a particular moment, even though I sometimes believe it’s impossible. Leaving everything familiar behind has forced me past all the barriers I had placed on myself. I’m writing, I’m learning to take photos, I’m out in nature and surrounded by the unfamiliar. And I love it. Here’s to doing the scary thing. Leave a comment and let me know which photo you liked best. Originally posted on Substack on Aug 25, 2025.
