AfroSwissters are warmly welcome to remain at photoSCHWEIZ, explore the exhibitions, take photos, and enjoy the atmosphere together.
Why this matters
AfroSwissters CONNECT is not a side event — it is the social and relational entry point into the conversation. We arrive as a community, move as a community, and take up space together — visibly, calmly, intentionally.
Come for the apéro.
Stay for the dialogue.
Linger for the energy.
We’re looking forward to sharing this afternoon with you.
AfroSwissters warmly invites its community to a special Forum Talk in collaboration with PHOTOSchweiz, bringing together curatorial perspective and photographic practice within the context of this year’s exhibition.
The conversation features:
Christin Khaukha, In-House Curator of photoSCHWEIZ, curating the festival for the first time
Kourtney Iman King, photographer and creative director based in Atlanta, currently completing her MFA in Fine Arts Photography
Together, they will reflect on curating and creating contemporary photographic work, offering insight into artistic process, curatorial decision-making, and how images are contextualised and experienced within a festival setting.

Themes
At the heart of this conversation lies a quiet but essential question: what does it mean to simply be?
In her work, Kourtney Iman King explores body movement, presence, and the subtle ways women—particularly Black women learn to hold, pose, and monitor themselves under inherited cultural expectations. Photography becomes a space to observe how these postures are learned, internalised, and, over time, unlearned.
The conversation reflects on inherited survival strategies, ideas of restraint, respectability, and constant readiness that once served as protection but can later limit self-authorship. Rather than framing this shift as rupture or rebellion for its own sake, the work speaks to a process of recalibration: separating worth from approval, identity from surveillance, and presence from performance.
Listening plays a central role in this practice. Through attentive observation and the stories of other women, photography becomes a method of care, allowing grace, sensuality, and dignity to appear without apology or explanation. The images resist urgency. They make space for softness, embodiment, and continuity.
Ultimately, the conversation is less about awakening than about reclaiming: of narrative, of body, of presence. It considers being not as passivity, but as an active, conscious practice. One that honours those who came before by choosing to live with greater awareness, agency, and ease.
