Not about victimhood. About power.

On International Women’s Day 2025, AfroSwissters and NWAR invited people to Storyboard House Collective in Chêne-Bougeries, near Geneva: a screening of Rachel M’Bon’s documentary Je suis Noires, followed by a conversation.

Je suis Noires

Swiss Film Prize 2023 · Best Short Film

A 52-minute documentary by Rachel M’Bon and Juliana Fanjul, also known as Becoming a Black Woman, in which Black women in Switzerland speak in their own words. It premiered at the Geneva International Film Festival and Forum on Human Rights (FIFDH) in March 2022.

The afternoon had three parts: the screening, a conversation afterwards, and time together. It honoured women of African descent and the allies who stand beside them.

Themes

What the afternoon was about.

  1. Identity

Naming yourself in your own words, beyond the labels others choose for you.

  2. Belonging

What it means to call Switzerland home, across languages, regions and generations.

  3. Visibility

Being seen and represented: on screen, at work and in public life.

  4. Power

The afternoon was framed around power, not victimhood, and around the journeys of women of African descent in Switzerland.
